How to learn English in your sleep?

“Learn English in your sleep?” you must be asking yourself that now. But is it true? SEDA College Online investigated this idea that seems so attractive and confusing.

Nowadays we know that this type of learning is almost impossible. Some studies show that even though some people are capable of keeping facts during their sleep, scientists say they could have woken up while hearing the recording.

Besides being impossible to teach things from scratch during one’s sleep, there are many ways, basic and sofisticated, of helping you to consolidate the knowledge acquired while you rest.

‘Manipulating’ dreams

Among many existing experiments to reach this goal, the French noble Marquis d’Hervey of Saint Denys found out better ways to manipulate their dreams through smells.

He showed the same sequence of objects to a group of volunteers while they inhaled an artifical fragance whilhe the other group was not introduced to any smell.

On the following day, 84% of the volunteers that inhaled the fragrance remembered exactly the sequence of objects.

The same approach can make the brain reproduce skills acquired during sleep, reinforcing the English learning.

Scientists opinion

According to the scientist Reiner, we still need to ask ourselves if it would be correct to manipulate people’s memories, even if it is with good intentions.

But the scientist also states that questions like this must not include the interest in learning during one’s sleep.

Reiner says that the ideal in just focusing in relaxing during sleep.
